Candle Care and FAQs

Candle Care

  • Allow enough time for the wax to melt completely to the edges of the jar to prevent “tunneling”

  • NEVER leave a burning candle unattended
  • Trim wick to ¼ inch before each use
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets
  • Keep wax pool free of debris

FAQs

  1.     How long do the candles burn?

Candle burn times have different contributing factors that may affect burn times. They can range from 20-90 hours. Key factors to get the best use out of your candle:

a.    Trim the Wick:
Before lighting the candle, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This prevents excessive smoking, soot buildup, and uneven burning.

b.    Allow a Full Melt Pool:
Let the candle burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the container during the first use. This helps avoid “tunneling,” where the wax burns down the center and leaves wax on the sides.

c.    Burn Time:
Limit burn sessions to 2-4 hours at a time. This keeps the candle from overheating and helps maintain an even burn.

d.    Proper Placement:
Place the candle on a heat-resistant, stable surface, away from drafts, vents, and anything flammable. This ensures safety and prevents uneven melting.

e.    Extinguishing Safely:
Use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame instead of blowing it out. This reduces smoke and keeps the wick upright for the next use.

f.    Storage:
Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve their fragrance and appearance.

  1.     How many times can I reuse my jar with new inserts?

We make our jars out of a natural porous material that we seal twice for maximum use. Our sealers are eco-friendly and are low VOC, water based, non-toxic, and contain no heavy metals. We seal twice to ensure that the wax doesn’t seep through the porous walls of our jars, but with use, the sealer will wear and you may start to notice some discoloration on the outside of the jars. The discoloration will look sort of like a grease stain.

Once you see discoloration, we encourage you to repurpose your jar for succulents, pens, trinkets etc and purchasing a new jar. And don’t forget to send us pictures of how you repurpose yours!

  1.     What type of wax do you use?

Our wax is 100% natural soy wax from soybeans grown in the USA. Soy wax is clean-burning and renewable, producing minimal soot and toxins, thus promoting better indoor air quality, and it also has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, meaning it will burn at a cooler temperature, making it less likely to cause a fire hazard. Soy wax is also easier to clean up and can be washed out with soap and water. It is also natural and eco-friendly, as it is made from soybeans and does not contain any of the toxins or pollutants that are found in paraffin wax. Additionally, soy wax candles burn longer than paraffin wax candles, making them a great choice for anyone looking for a longer burning candle.

  1.     Are our products phthalate free?

Yes, we diligently look for and exclusively only use fragrance oils that are free of phthalates.

Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are esters of Phthalic acid. They are used to dissolve raw materials when making fragrance oils. They have been used for many decades in a myriad of pharmaceuticals, household, and industrial products. Recently, there have been concerns that high levels of Phthalates can cause a host of health issues. It is not clear whether the levels that people encounter cause adverse effects, but it is clear to us that products would be better if they didn’t pose any such risks. Therefore, we choose to make our candles with Phthalate-free fragrance oils.

  1.     What is melt pool?

A melt pool is the puddle of liquid that forms on the surface of a burning candle when the flames melts the solid wax.

  1.     What is tunneling?

Candle tunneling is a circular pit that forms directly around a candle wick caused by uneven melting, which creates a trench, or tunnel, in the middle of the candle.

  1.     What is mushrooming?

Mushrooming in candles is when the wick forms a mushroom-shaped cap of carbon particles at the end of the wick. Always trim your wick prior to lighting to help prevent mushrooming.

  1.     What is scent throw?

There are two types of scent throw—hot throw and cold throw. Hot throw is a term used to describe the strength of fragrance while a candle is burning. Cold throw is a term used to describe the strength of fragrance while a candle is not burning.

  1. What is paraffin wax and do you use it in your candles?

Paraffin wax is commonly used to make candles and wax melts because it is generally cheaper to produce than soy wax and other natural waxes. Since paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, coal, or shale oil, it has been found to contain known carcinogens (cancer causing agents) such as benzene and toluene.

When burning paraffin wax candles, it releases the carcinogens into the air that we breathe which have been linked to headaches, lung diseases such as asthma and cancers as well as other health issues.

Paraffin wax is used in many popular wax blends these days, such as coconut, apricot, and soy blends.

We pride ourselves in using 100% all-natural soy wax which is free from parabens, phthalates and paraffins. Without the use of these, our products are non-toxic, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. We will never put paraffin wax in any of our products.

  1. Do you have an option for people who are sensitive to scented candles but love burning candles?

Yes, we have recently added a beeswax candle line. We absolutely love beeswax.

We source our pure beeswax from our friends at Beehive Yourself in North Carolina. Beeswax is amazing in that it actually cleans the air as the candle is burning. We have chosen to offer our candles unscented for our friends who are sensitive to fragrances. Pure beeswax has a natural honey scent that we love, and the flame burns brighter and longer than all other natural waxes. Plus, we have poured our beeswax candles into 100% recycled glass jars that can be used as drinking glasses once the candle has been completely consumed.
